A Safe Space for Peace and Belonging
“Many members of our community spent years isolated from their families and the world around them. The retreat creates a safe space where they can build meaningful relationships, share experiences with people who truly understand, and enjoy moments of peace, connection, and belonging. It reminds every participant that they are not alone and that the Exoneree Network is more than a service provider—we are a community committed to supporting one another long after their release.”
In June, the Exoneree Network came together at Essex Woods for our third annual wellness retreat—an opportunity for community members to step away from daily pressures, reconnect with one another, and focus on healing.
Throughout the weekend, our members and their support people shared stories, supported one another, and embraced the power of community in an intimate setting. The retreat was a reminder that healing is not a destination, but a journey that requires patience, presence, and people who walk alongside you.
“Because of the many years that [community members] lost, they feel like they're going to lose more, so they're constantly on the go," said Madeline S., who attended the retreat as a support person for an Exoneree Network member. “This community is a very, very, very special community. When you see them embrace, give each other a hug, it's breathtaking."
The program, which was facilitated by Who’s Got Morale, brought to light how sometimes progress looks like small steps: showing up, listening, being present, and creating space for one another—and how, together, those small steps become something powerful.
We are grateful to Essex Woods, Who’s Got Morale, and everyone else who helped make this gathering possible, and proud to continue building a community grounded in hope, healing, and belonging.
