Are you passionate about freedom? Come join our team!
The New England Innocence Project (NEIP) is a non-profit organization that frees innocent people from prison, supports individuals and families impacted by long-term incarceration, and fights to end the systemic harms of the criminal legal system in the six New England states. We represent people with claims of innocence and use litigation, training, public education, and policy efforts to create systemic change in the criminal legal system.
Founded in 2000, and officially becoming a non-profit in 2004, we’ve grown into a diverse team of dedicated individuals. We endeavor to approach our work through an anti-racist, intersectional lens and use consensus-based decision-making where possible. We recognize that the criminal legal system and the carceral state are shaped by white supremacy and capitalism. We see our work as an opportunity to challenge and undermine the system's drive for punishment, especially in marginalized communities.

Volunteers
We appreciate your interest in volunteering with NEIP!
Due to the sensitivity and complexity of our work, our volunteer opportunities are limited and change often based on the needs of our team and our community. Please fill out the volunteer application to get started.
If you have any questions, please email our Development Coordinator, Sadie Blanco, at sadie@newenglandinnocence.org.
Here are our current volunteer opportunities:
-
Ongoing - Time commitment required (In-Person)
We need committed help to scan important documents and keep files organized for our legal team; assist intake staff with filing, procuring documents, and data entry. As is the case with other opportunities on this list, we require confidentiality about the documents or administrative tasks that you encounter.
-
Ongoing
Do you enjoy gathering friends, family, or coworkers for fun, educational events? You can host your own fundraiser/friend-raiser or awareness-building event, benefitting NEIP, with ideas that can spark conversation and interest. With the theme of understanding wrongful convictions, you can host a book club; do a TV show or movie viewing; discuss a podcast on wrongful conviction cases; or create a cocktail party for a cause. One of our team members would be happy to join and talk about NEIP!
For inspiration, visit our Media Center.
-
Ongoing - Requires court attendance (can be as short as 15 minutes or as long as several hours). Virtual opportunities are sometimes available.
Court support is needed at various times throughout the year if NEIP has cases in active litigation. Directed by one of our team members, you would be informed of a date/location to arrive, accompany NEIP team members in a courtroom, and sit with the team to show your physical presence as support for individuals currently fighting for freedom.
In order to prepare for this volunteer opportunity, quarterly info sessions are hosted by NEIP to talk about the general understanding of court support and how you can become more involved if interested. You must attend one of these sessions to participate.
Register for upcoming info sessions on the volunteer application:
Wednesday, August 6th at 2 pm
Wednesday, October 8th at 2 pm

While every release and reunion after a wrongful incarceration is joyous, it is seldom easy. The Exoneree Network (EN) was created to provide direct and immediate assistance to those returning under these conditions and to continue to support them as they navigate a world very different from the one from which they were taken. EN provides necessary technology equipment to members, but ongoing support is needed to help teach individuals how to use their phone and computers. Volunteers can help bridge this gap and provide ongoing support.
