Make Freedom Possible with a Year-End Gift

Your gift helps transform years of legal work into a story of freedom

For every exoneration you hear about, there are hundreds of wrongfully convicted people still in prison you don't hear about. That's because so much of the work we do to pursue an exoneration happens behind the scenes. We currently have 107 active investigations, and with your support, these cases can become freedom stories too.

Our legal team is working around the clock, and we need your help to keep us going. Most of our legal work happens long before a case reaches court or the headlines. We pore over thousands of pages of documents, track down witnesses around the world, and consult experts across every scientific field to dissect what led to our client's wrongful conviction. Only after thousands of hours of analysis do we bring a case forward, given the tremendous resistance we know we will face. But every effort is worth it if we can bring an innocent person home.

Make a 2X matching gift

Thanks to the incredible generosity of supporters like you, we have already met the $50,000 match offered at the start of this campaign. But just as we reached that milestone, a new donor stepped forward with an additional challenge: they will match all gifts up to $10,000. This unexpected opportunity means your gift today will still be doubled, fueling the intense legal work underway behind the scenes across all 107 investigations.

Give today, and your gift will be matched up to $10,000 through December 31, 2025.

This past October, we were in Connecticut, fighting for our client, someone who has been wrongfully incarcerated for 37 years. While the path to their freedom is long and complicated, blocked by restrictive state laws and limited legal avenues to challenge a wrongful conviction, we cannot give up. We work to find creative ways to bring people home. Because at the New England Innocence Project, we refuse to let wrongful convictions stand unchallenged.

Then, in early November, our team stood before the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court defending a DNA testing order of a client whose dying wish was to clear his name. While he will never experience freedom himself, his case could open the door for others as each legal victory sets a precedent for the next, creating new case law that offers more pathways to freedom. Our search for the truth on behalf of our community members knows no bounds.

We’re also expanding our work in cases where outdated science has sent innocent people to prison. For example, two of our attorneys are now leading investigations into three alleged arson cases, building on lessons from exoneree James Hebshie's case to expose other wrongful convictions. As our expertise grows, so do our opportunities to take on more cases. But we need your help.

Your support makes this work possible. Together, we’re not only freeing the innocent, we're exposing injustices to create systemic change.

Please, make your matching gift today and stand with us in the fight for freedom.
