Bernard Baran
19 years
Bernard Baran was arrested at the age of 19 for sexually assaulting two 3-year-olds at the daycare where he worked in Massachusetts. Baran was convicted on coerced and incredible testimony from the children, and without any physical evidence. The techniques used while interviewing the children have now been shown to elicit false allegations. Baran was given three life sentences. During his 19 years in prison, Bernard was subjected to physical and emotional abuse by other prisoners. Attorney John Swomley helped to prepare a motion for new trial in 2006, which was granted. Finally, in 2009 the DA’s office agreed to drop all charges against Baran.
